Pro Surfer Rob Machado has donated this spectacular photograph – Chile Birds (16” x 48” photo on canvas) for our 13th Annual Art Gala!
Rob Machado is not just one of the world’s greatest surfers; he’s one of the sport’s most recognizable characters, a living icon who continues to expand the definition of what professional surfing is all about. His contribution to the sport extends far beyond his accolades in a colored jersey. Since his departure from the ASP tour in 2001, Machado has been one of surfing’s most committed ambassadors, roaming the globe, surfing the world’s best waves and deepening his commitment to support various humanitarian and environmental organizations.
In 2004 Rob established The Rob Machado Foundation, which in partnership with the Cardiff SEA develops and financially supports the “greening” of Machado’s hometown’s elementary school district. Since inception, the collaboration initiatives have included onsite recycling, organic gardening and healthy lunch programs.
Rob’s goodwill does not stop on the local-level as he is a central figure for his sponsor’s efforts through the Reef Redemption program and Hurley’s H20 Water education initiative. In 2009 he was the recipient of the One Degree Less Award from Planet Green + the Water Council of Brazil Project as well as being recognized for his dedication to environmental activism awarded by Oceana. All of this – along with his down-to-earth, approachable aura – makes Machado one of surfing’s most influential athletes of all time. And since he’s still writing his incredible story, it’s an influence that will only grow over time.
